Visitors

The safety and security of our students and staff at all times is a top priority at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. Mr. Noschese, Chief Operating Officer at WPSD, explains the new visitor management system and gives instructions for visitors coming to the School.

WPSD welcomes parents, prospective students, alumni and friends to visit the school. However, because of security and safety concerns, visitors should contact the school in advance and schedule a time for the visit.

Family tours can be arranged by contacting the Children’s Services Coordinator, Tara Nikou (412-244-4268 or tnikou@wpsd.org ).  All other requests for tours can be arranged by contacting the Administrative Assistant to the Principal.

On Monday through Friday, during school hours, all visitors need to check in with the security guard at the front gate on Swissvale Avenue. The guard will inform the receptionist that a visitor has arrived and open the gate.

Visitors must then register at the reception area in the front office and receive a “Visitors Pass.” The pass must be worn at all times while on the campus and returned when the visit concludes. Visitors who have business with the school should check in and wait at the reception area until a school representative escorts them to the appropriate department/office.

Parents who have appointments or wish to visit classes should check in with the receptionist in the front office. A representative from their child’s department will meet them and escort them to the proper location.

Visitors are not allowed to enter residential areas without the permission of the Dean or Assistant Dean of Students.

People attending special events such as Homecoming, May Day, sporting events, etc. do not need visitor passes. These events are good times for people to visit the school and visit with friends and teachers.
