From athletics to chess club, WPSD’s after school program provides students opportunities to participate in various activities and to develop their friendships with deaf and hard-of-hearing peers in an informal setting. Clubs and activities are viewed as equally valued opportunities for social interaction and character building.
For younger students after school activities include Mighty Mite sports, Language Lab and Avocational Clubs. Yearbook, pottery, and chess are some of the other clubs that older students can join. For those interested in developing leadership skills, Student Body Government (SBG), the Varsity Letter Club and the Girl’s Athletic Association are offered. Some High School students also participate in an off campus bowling league. The Sophomore, Junior and Senior Classes generally form class organizations for social and service purposes. There are two gyms and outdoor basketball courts for students to use after school, and of course, playgrounds and a 17-acre campus provide students with the opportunity to enjoy the abundant outdoor space.
The Lions Den is an on-campus snack bar where students can gather and socialize in the evening. All of the students really enjoy meeting friends in this setting. Field trips to Pittsburgh-area entertainment sites are also offered to students.
The staff constantly tries to provide the students with a wide spectrum of after-school activities, offering a truly balanced life while they are in school. In a recent survey, parents listed after-school activities and the opportunity for their children to interact with peers as very important to them.
