The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf has received national recognition for its leadership in the field of deaf education. For over 135 years, WPSD has provided outstanding educational services to deaf and hard-of-hearing children. The school has made a conscientious effort to reach out to the community through a variety of events and projects. WPSD participates in the Commitment to Community, a volunteer organization of citizens, civic and business leaders from the Wilkinsburg and Edgewood communities.

The school is extremely active in the American Society for Deaf Children (ASDC). Events held throughout the year include golf outings, a dinner auction, a community yard sale and an art auction. Volunteers are an integral part of these functions. WPSD publications provide information about the school, residential programs, activities and special events. The Western Pennsylvanian has been published since 1893, and its mailing list continues to grow.

The Learning Center newsletter focuses on the activities that occur within this environment. The annual report and other publications are produced throughout the year in order to convey the WPSD message to the public. The Development Office is responsible for seeking funds to support special projects throughout the school. An Annual Appeal is another way that this office pursues funds to enable the school to continue its leading edge in deaf education.

Press releases are sent to print and broadcast media throughout the school year. WPSD welcomes the opportunity to spotlight our students and staff who have been honored in some fashion or who have accomplished extraordinary goals. It is an ideal way for others to learn about the dedicated staff and talented students who are an important part of the WPSD family.
