At the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, qualified support personnel, experienced in working with deaf and hard-of-hearing children are available full-time to provide services and to conduct monitoring of student needs. Our staff includes Speech Language Pathologists, Audiologists, a School Psychologist, a Communication Teacher, an Occupational/Physical Therapist, Guidance Consuselors and an Art Therapist.
The audiologists are available for diagnostic, habilitative, and consultation services for students and their families.
Counseling is also an integral part of the program, and the art-therapist, guidance counselors and vocational evaluator are available to provide services when needed. The occupational/physical therapist is scheduled to address the special needs of students. The certified school psychologist is responsible for testing during the intake evaluation, and then conducts periodic testing as needed while the child is enrolled at WPSD.
These professionals work together with the certified teachers of the deaf in the classrooms, to provide the kind of specialized environment in which deaf and hard-of-hearing children can maximize their learning.
This very supportive and nurturing climate is available to all students. By recognizing the individual needs of children, WPSD provides one of the most comprehensive programs available.
