Registration is now open for the Winter Session of ASL Classes at WPSD.
At WPSD, ASL classes go beyond sign language instruction. Our instructors not only teach signing language skills, but they also promote an understanding of Deaf Culture through interaction with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
Classes are taught at four skill levels:
-
- ASL 1 – Students will develop basic finger spelling, vocabulary and grammar skills. Discussion of Deaf Culture and interactions with the Deaf Community will be key components of this course.
- ASL 2 – This course is designed to expand expressive and receptive vocabulary and grammar skills. The course will focus on specific topics such as: classifiers, time, numbers, directionality and storytelling, as well as language structure and Deaf history and culture.
- ASL 3 – This class will provide an evaluation of each student’s communication skills, and focus on individual needs. Attention to advanced grammar and signs will be emphasized and will include dialogues that involve asking, empathizing, negotiation, agreeing and disagreeing.
- ASL 4 – This is an advanced course. It progresses from common, concrete interactions to expressing abstract ideas. Emphasis is on the comprehension and production of increasingly complex communication and includes descriptors, classifier use, non-manual signals, mouth morphemes and numbering systems.
~~~~~~~~
Classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on the WPSD campus at 300 East Swissvale Avenue in Edgewood Borough, Allegheny County. Our mailing address is 300 East Swissvale Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218.
Please note. Students from ages 14 -18 are welcome to register for classes IF they are accompanied by a registered parent or guardian.
WPSD 5th and 6th grader enjoy a trip to the PA Capitol.
Last week, WPSD’s 5th and 6th graders traveled to the Pennsylvania Capitol for their annual trip Harrisburg. Rep. Summer Lee and Senator Jay Costa
graciously hosted the students in the House and the Senate.
In the House, the students spent time in the chamber to visit with individual members. Later, the group was invited to the front of the chamber to join Rep. Lee and Speaker Turzai when the school was introduced and welcomed by the entire House of Representatives. It was an incredible experience to see all 203 Representatives looking at us as we were announced to the House.
Afterwards, the students crossed the main rotunda to enter the Senate, where they spent time on the floor. Senators took time to meet with their students and shared a conversation and a photo. Later, the group was seated in the gallery and enjoyed a warm welcome from Senator Costa, Lt. Governor Fetterman, and several other Senators.
WPSD is deeply grateful for the hospitality and kindness of Re
p. Lee and Senator Costa and all of the Representatives and Senators who took time from their very busy day to make the students’ trip to the Capitol a memorable visit.
WPSD expresses its deepest appreciation to every sponsor that generously supported the upcoming 150th Anniversary celebration on Saturday, October 26th.
